Exercise as medicine and healthcare for sports injuries
Physical activity is crucial for population health. However, approximately 48% of people stop physical activity because of injuries. Half of the 10 million active Dutch individuals sustain an injury in their lives. Injuries led to 50 million physically inactive days in 2021.
Both acute (e.g., knee ligament injuries and elbow injuries) and chronic (e.g., tendon injuries) injuries decrease quality of life and limit health-promoting physical activities. Effective injury prevention and treatments will likely have a large health and socioeconomic impact.
This research line focuses on:
• the effect of preventive interventions for sports-related injuries.
• the effect of surgical and non-surgical treatments in complex knee ligament injuries.
• the effect of targeted exercise programs in tendon overuse injuries using App development in collaboration with TU-Delft.
• the effect of regenerative injection therapies for sports injuries.
• biomechanical analysis of load bearing of the upper limb during sports in collaboration with TU-Delft.
• the effect of novel, minimal invasive surgery to treat osteochondral defects in knee and elbow to enhance activity and prevent osteoarthritis.
