J. W. (Joost) Colaris MD, PhD

Introduction

Joost Colaris completed his doctoral degree in Medicine at the University of Leuven. In 2003 he graduated cum laude at the University of Leiden. In 2010 he became an orthopedic surgeon at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. 

Fields of expertise

From 2012 he was trained in hand and wrist surgery at the department of Plastic Surgery and in 2014 he passed the FESSH examination (Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand) with a best diploma award. He is currently mainly treating (traumatic) pathology of the upper extremity in adults and children.
 

Teaching activities

He actively participates in the faculty of several courses (AO foundation, OTC foundation, Esser Masterclass, Dutch arthroscopy course, arthroscopy & arthroplasty course) and gives (inter)national lectures. Furthermore, he is one of the founders of the annually BIG hand event. Joost wrote several chapters in textbooks, and an interview about children’s fractures has been published. 

Research activities

In 2014 Joost successfully defended his thesis 'Forearm fractures in children'. He won the Dr. G.J. Heijmans price, the NVOT award, the Biomet price, and the Dutch trauma award. Thereby the Dr. G.J. van Hoytema foundation chose his thesis as topic for their congress. Joost is still actively involved in research of elbow-, forearm-, wrist- and hand-pathology and received grants of more than 1.5 million euro as main applicant or co-applicant. As member of the chair of the Machine Learning consortium Joost is actively involved in Artificial Intelligence related research (An International Collaboration to Connect Surgeons, Expert Computer Scientists and Reliable Data Sources). Thereby, 3D patient specific surgical planning and guides are the topic of several (finished) international studies. Joost is involved in the Hand study wrist group. Currently Joost is principal investigator and guides multiple PhD-students.
