What Do We Aim to Achieve?
An Achilles tendon injury is commonly seen in long-distance runners. Overuse is often a significant cause of this injury. In cases of Achilles tendon complaints, this injury can be effectively visualized through ultrasound examination. An Achilles tendon injury is characterized by a thickened tendon with a disrupted arrangement of the fibers within the tendon. To date, the relationship between running load and tendon structure on ultrasound examination is not sufficiently understood. Various studies have not provided a clear conclusion about the change in the structure of the Achilles tendon during marathon training or after completing a marathon. With this research, we aim to determine the effect of marathon training and running a marathon on the structure of the Achilles tendon in both runners without prior complaints and runners with Achilles tendon complaints.
What Will We Do?
You will receive an ultrasound examination of the Achilles tendon before and at the end of the marathon training; this can be done at the running club or at the Erasmus Medical Center. Prior to this, you will fill out a questionnaire. In the week after the marathon, you will receive another ultrasound examination of the Achilles tendon. In total, this will take approximately 15-20 minutes on three occasions.”
