After finishing my master in health sciences in July 2017, I had the opportunity to start my PhD project at the department of Orthopaedic surgery at Erasmus. My project is about physical therapy after total hip or knee replacement. Physiotherapy is a proven effective treatment strategy after total knee and hip replacement, however there is considerable practice variation regarding its timing, content and duration. We evaluate this practice variation in de PaTIO study in 18 different hospitals in the Netherlands. The aim of the PaTIO study is to compare the (cost-) effectiveness of a standardized, treat-to-target postoperative physiotherapy strategy with usual postoperative care.
